In December 2012, Roanwell received their AS9100 certification. This concluded one journey, however marks an exciting new beginning at Roanwell, a beginning that will further emphasizes the companies continual improvement policy and ultimately lead to improved product quality and increase Roanwell’s customer satisfaction.
The journey to obtain certification began in late 2009 when Roanwell embarked on a major overhaul of its quality management system. Its in-house quality system had served well over the years, but due to the changing environment of manufacturing and greater demands from customers, Roanwell began the process of reviewing their quality system and upgrading to AS9100.
Understanding the importance of the AS9100 registration and the time and effort that would be required, Will Rathbun, Roanwell’s QA Director jumped in at the deep end, as he puts it, with EQA‘s consultant Craig Sacerdote and support from ITAC. Beginning with a gap analysis of current procedures and practices, Craig and Will helped Roanwell devise and implement a new quality management system, and led the way through to the registration process.
According to Will, some of Roanwell’s procedures proved to be of value and just had to be formalized, while others had to be tweaked. However, some areas either had no procedure in place or the procedure was out of date and required a complete rewrite. Craig and I started a plan of attack, going through the specification itself, looking at what we had in place so far, reviewing their adequacy and attacking those areas that needed it, taking a process approach to procedure generation.
It was a collaborative effort. We didn’t write this in a vacuum. We brought in the process owners in the Roanwell organization the people who do each function. Getting upfront buy-in from the process owners and affected employees helped expedite the process. Given the circumstances of what was in place at the start of the process, this was quite a feat.
“Craig Sacerdote and ITAC are outstanding,” Will says. This was the first time I had the opportunity to work with them myself. I found Craig to be very knowledgeable in this field and of great value through the whole AS 9100 process, including internal auditor training. In 2010, we put six people through that training to establish a core of internal auditors a cross-section of people throughout the company. We plan to put another six people next year through that training.
Roanwell anticipates to be listed in the International Aerospace Quality Group’s Online Aerospace Supplier Information System. With the new quality management system coming into place, the company is positioned for the future and opening up other opportunities in the defense, aerospace and commercial acoustic industries.
